First Top Men's Professional Soccer Player Comes Out Publicly at Home Game Over Gay Proposal

In a historic moment, Australian footballer Josh Cavallo became the first top male professional player in the sport to come out publicly and proposed to his partner at the team's home stadium, a gesture that not only demonstrated the power of love, but also proclaimed to the world the acceptance of diverse gender identities in the soccer world.

The brave footballer got engaged more than two years after coming out publicly. He previously admitted in a video that trying to keep up appearances while living a "double life" was an "exhausting endeavor" that he wouldn't want anyone else to go through.

Cavallo's story is an inspiring chapter, stating, "Growing up, I always felt the need to hide myself because I was ashamed - ashamed that I would never be able to do what I love and be gay, hide who I really am to pursue what I always wished for when I was a little girl All I wanted to do was play soccer and be treated equally."

Publicly out players remain very rare in professional men's soccer. In 2019, Andy Brennan, who plays for semi-professional team South Melbourne Football Club, became the first Australian professional men's player to come out while still an active player. Czech Republic midfielder Jakub Jankto revealed last year that he is gay, making him and Cavallo the only two openly gay players in the top tier. Former U.S. national team member Robbie Rogers announced his retirement from professional soccer in 2013, however, he went on to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy and became the first openly gay Major League Soccer player.

Josh Cavallo's story is not only a story of love and courage, but also a testimony to how the soccer world is evolving into a more inclusive and accepting community of diverse gender identities. His actions and words will undoubtedly inspire more people to be brave enough to be themselves and push the sports community to make even greater strides in gender identity and sexual orientation.
