Rewriting the Letters of an Abandoned Bride

Rethinking Misconceptions About Bisexuality: A Letter from Abby

Dear readers.

In this diverse world, we often come across all kinds of love stories, each with its own unique characteristics. However, when these stories involve gender identity and sexual orientation, they often lead to more discussion and reflection. Today, I would like to share with you a story about a mother from Louisiana whose daughter was abandoned by her fiancé because she was bisexual.

This mother wrote a letter to me on December 6, telling me what happened to her daughter. Her daughter was about to enter into marriage with her fiancé, but three days before the wedding, the fiancé canceled the wedding because he found out that she was bisexual. The mother was worried about her daughter's sexual orientation and was disturbed that her daughter was hiding her true identity. She even told her daughter, "Don't bring these women here.

After replying to this letter, I received feedback from members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly bisexuals, who felt that my reply 'could have been better'. I realize that the bisexual community is one of the largest, least visible, and most misunderstood of the LGBTQ+ community. This has led to the misconception that bisexuality is a midpoint between heterosexuality and homosexuality, or an identity that people claim in order to deny that they are gay. This is not true.

Bisexuality means that a person can be attracted to people of different genders. It does not mean that they cannot be monogamous. I regret that I didn't point out to the mother that her unsupportive reaction may have been the very reason why her daughter didn't come out to her as bisexual earlier.

In addition, I could have suggested to this mother that in order to be a safe, loving and affirming presence for her daughter, she should educate herself about bisexuality. If she did, her daughter might be more willing to share with her her choice of partner, which has less to do with the gender of the partner and more to do with how they treat her daughter.

Love, Abby.

In this story, we can see that understanding and acceptance of gender identity and sexual orientation has a profound effect on the relationships between family members. Through education and open dialog, we can create a more inclusive and understanding society. Let's work together to create a world of love and acceptance for all.
