The original Wedding Banquet tells the story of a Taiwanese gay immigrant man who marries a Chinese woman in order to conceal his sexual orientation and his partner, with the goal of getting her a green card. When his parents arrive in the U.S. to organize a wedding reception for him, a series of lies spiral out of control. The film not only won wide acclaim for its emotional delicacy and humor, but was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 1994.

The director of the remake will be Fire Island's Andrew Ann, based on his own and Shamus' screenplay. Commenting on the remake, original director Ang Lee said, "It's heartwarming to see how my movie from years ago has inspired a new generation to re-imagine a new and different version of it." He is looking forward to what Andruan and the new cast will create.

The story of the remake will be changed to tell the story of the protagonist Min, who, after her boyfriend Chris refuses to propose, proposes to her friend Angela and promises to pay for her partner Liz's in vitro fertilization treatment in exchange for a green card. However, just like in the original, the sudden arrival of Min's relatives causes the mystery to fall apart.

In addition to Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, the remake will also star a cast member from Saturday Night Live, Kylie Marie Chan, Chen Chong, and Academy Award winner Yoon Eu-jung, among other solid actors. With such a star-studded cast, there is no doubt that the remake is highly anticipated.

Andrew Karpen, Founder and CEO of production company Bleecker Street and Executive Producer, said, "I'm thrilled to be re-teaming with my longtime friend and colleague, James Schamus, to re-imagine a classic romantic comedy for the modern age. Andrew Anne is a force to be reckoned with and I'm excited to see him and James take this story to new heights."

As the production of the remake of The Wedding Banquet progresses, we look forward to seeing how this new production will convey more profound thoughts about love, family and identity to modern audiences while retaining the essence of the original.
