After spending a grueling 10 months in a Russian prison, WNBA lesbian star Brittney Griner has finally broken her silence about her incarceration on drug-related charges. In an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts during Wednesday's Golden Hour, Griner said she wanted to end her life more than once during the first few weeks.

On July 7, 2022, Greiner pleaded guilty to the drug charges at her trial, but said she had inadvertently put e-cigarette bullets containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was sentenced to nine years in prison on August 4, 2022, and in October, the judge denied her attorney's appeal.

Griner was imprisoned in a place of exile in the Mordovia region of Russia, where her job was to cut fabric for Russian military uniforms. She describes the conditions there, including very cold weather, which affected her health and forced her to cut off her long braids.

Before winning her freedom, Greiner revealed that the authorities forced her to write a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking for his forgiveness and gratitude. Her arrest coincided with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, further exacerbating tensions between Russia and the United States.

Griner recounts this experience in her memoir, Coming Home, which will be released on May 7th. Her story is not only a tale of survival and hope, but also a reminder of our concern for those struggling with adversity and an important message: find hope in the midst of despair and never give up.
