Vice President Harris' special interaction with Gray of the WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces at the White House highlights support for LGBTQ+ rights
On a historic Wednesday, the Las Vegas Aces celebrated their win of the 2023 WNBA Championship at the White House - not only was it their second championship in as many years, but the interaction between Vice President Kamala Harris and Aces point guard Chelsea Gray during this celebration was incredibly meaningful to the LGBTQ+ community.
Vice President Harris praised the Aces' advocacy efforts at the ceremony in the East Room, where Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was also present, specifically highlighting their dedication to supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Vice President Harris said, "In addition to being champions on the field, you are role models and leaders off the field. You advocate for the freedom to vote. You spoke up for LGBTQ rights. You fight for paycheck fairness."
In an interview with The Advocate after the ceremony, 2022 league MVP Chelsea Gray shared her thoughts on the moment. She presented Harris with a team jersey during the ceremony and said, "That's so cool, man. I told her (Vice President Harris) to keep doing that. You might have some superpowers, kind of like an ace uniform." Gray joked. She praised Harris' "interesting personality."
Gray also reflected on the wider impact of her trip to the White House. "There was a time when my wife and I couldn't get into the building, so it was important to be able to do that, take pictures and enjoy the moment together." The openly lesbian point guard expressed deep appreciation for the exposure and recognition of LGBTQ+ issues at such a public and prestigious event.
Gray also discussed her role as a mentor and inspiration for LGBTQ+ young people, emphasizing the importance of paving your own path. "Sometimes you try to find the person you want to follow and sometimes that can be difficult. Everyone's journey is a little bit different, so I always say, if you don't see a path yet, create your own and have fun. You can only live one life and enjoy every step of it." She advises.
President Joe Biden also spoke at the event, focusing on the team's accomplishments and the broader impact of women in sports. He emphasized the need for the country to support women's sports not only through attendance and ratings, but also through sponsorships and programming to help grow the women's sports business. He also praised the exemplary performance of the Aces and reiterated the importance of visibility and support for women's sports.
Biden said, "It's important for girls and women to finally see themselves represented, and it's important for all of America."
This White House celebration not only recognized the Las Vegas Aces' victory, but it was also a powerful display of support and affirmation for the LGBTQ+ community and women athletes.
